Shutoff Valves: When and Where to Choose

Mar. 09, 2022

As the name implies, globe valves are designed to ultimately stop the flow of fluid or throttle it to achieve the desired flow parameters. These mechanisms play a vital role in the function of the system and are often overlooked when it comes to the basic components.

There are several types of globe valves to choose from, and understanding each type and its intended use will help you determine which valve is right for your application.

Butterfly Valves

Butterfly valves are recommended for clean fluids only, such as potable water. They are not recommended for use with slurries or when grit or solids are present in the fluid stream due to a disk seal system.

Butterfly valves Butterfly valves are commonly used for flow regulation and fluid stopping in large diameter pipelines. They are very compact, have few internal parts, and are relatively inexpensive. The shaft attached to the valve flap passes through the valve centerline body housing and extends from the top and connects to the actuator. As the actuator rotates, it causes the valve flap inside the valve to be parallel or perpendicular to the direction of flow. When perpendicular, the plate seals against the interior, creating a tight closure. When turned parallel to the flow, it allows fluid to pass easily.

They work well as throttle valves to control flow and are very versatile in design to cover a wide range of applications. LIWEI manufactures a variety of designs and sizes to suit different pressures and specific applications.

Gate Valves

Gate valves are primarily flanged valves designed for systems with clean fluids, such as potable water. They can also be used for slurries or when grit or solids are present in the fluid stream, making them an excellent choice for clean water and wastewater applications.

This style utilizes a sliding gate or wedge on a threaded operating rod to stop the flow of fluid, rather than using a rotating disc as in previous butterfly designs.

Opening a valve to allow fluid flow is as easy as lifting the gate out of the fluid path. A distinguishing feature of gate valves is that the sealing surface between the gate and seat is flat. The blocking mechanism may be a rubber encapsulated wedge or a thinner metal gate that slides between the two seals to form a fluid-tight connection. When fully open, gate valves usually have no flow obstructions and therefore very low friction losses.

Plug Valves

Plug valves are designed for slurry systems or systems where grit or solids are present in the fluid stream, making them an excellent choice for wastewater applications.

Plug Valve Options These valves are right-angle rotary valves such as butterfly and plug valves designed to provide a cost-effective solution for pump control, shutoff and throttling operations. When rotated to the open position, the plug is designed to move completely out of the seat, resulting in minimal contact and low operating torque. They are often compared functionally to ball valves, but have different internal components. The seat design of a plug valve does not have a cavity like a ball valve, so media and fluids are not trapped in the valve in any position.

Choose LIWEI

When selecting a globe valve, remember to consider each factor of your individual system. First, consider the type and characteristics of the fluid - whether it is a clean fluid or one that contains solids, grit, or viscous materials. Next, determine the pipeline flow rate, differential pressure across the valve seat, and valve position. Finally, consider the operating conditions of the valve and whether you want to simply open or close the flow completely, or use the valve for throttling purposes.
